What we aim for

This site is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA, which is the standard generally referenced in connection with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Accessibility is treated as part of building the site rather than something added afterwards.

What that means here

• Every page can be used with a keyboard alone, and the focused element is always visible.
• A “Skip to content” link is the first thing a keyboard or screen reader user reaches.
• Every form field has a label that is read out, including the individual cells of the travel calendar.
• Text and background colours are checked against the AA contrast thresholds.
• Pages use real headings, landmarks and lists, so a screen reader can navigate by structure.
• Text can be enlarged without content being cut off or overlapping.
• Animation is reduced automatically if your device asks for that.

The accessibility toolbar

The button on the left of every page opens options for larger text, higher or reversed contrast, a light background, grayscale, underlined links and a more readable typeface. Your choice is remembered on your own device.

These options are a convenience, not a substitute for the work above. A toolbar cannot make an inaccessible page accessible, so we do not rely on it to meet the standard.

How we check

Every page is tested automatically against the WCAG 2.1 A and AA rules on each release, covering the public pages and the tax forms. Automated testing cannot catch everything, so we also rely on being told when something does not work.
